PDW74 PHASER TYPE III COMPACT ASSAULT RIFLE
Introduction: 2374
The Personal Defense Weapon (PDW) 74 is a Phaser Type III compact assault rifle developed by Starfleet Research & Development of San Francisco and was released in the year 2374. The PDW74 was created in response to Starfleet Marine Corps, Starfleet Rangers, and Starfleet Military Assault Commando Operations (MACOs) requests for a compact and powerful firearm for vehicle crews, operators of crew-served weapons, support personnel, special forces, and counter-terrorism groups.
The PDW74 is a selective fire weapon with a cyclic rate of fire of 900 RPM (rounds per minute). It features a compact bullpup design and fully ambidextrous controls--it can be operated by right or left-handed shooters with equal ease, and without making any modifications to the weapon. The weapon's smooth, rounded contours prevent it from snagging on the shooter's clothing or equipment. The weapon is powered by a removable re-chargeable power cell in the stock. Additional power cells may be carried in a standard issue utility belt. The PDW74 can also be fitted with a sling for ease of carry. The weapon resembles the FN P90 created in the late 20th Century by FN Herstel in Belgium.
The weapon is grasped by means of a thumbhole in the frame that acts as a pistol grip, as well as an oversized trigger guard that acts as a foregrip to support the shooter's hand. To prevent the shooter's hand from accidentally slipping in front of the beam emitter while firing, a small vertical protrusion is provided at the front end of the weapon's frame. Located at the foot of the trigger, is a three-position rotary dial fire control selector. The dial has three settings: S – safe, 1 – semi-automatic fire, and A – fully automatic fire. When set on A, the PDW74's fire selector provides a two-stage trigger operation—pulling the trigger back slightly produces semi-automatic fire, and pulling the trigger fully to the rear produces fully automatic fire. A thumb-operated lever above the trigger can be used to quickly release the power cell. A replenished power cell can then be quickly inserted using the other hand. The PDW74 has provisions for mounting a number of different types of accessories, including tactical lights, such as SIMs beacons, aiming devices, and targeting scanners.
The PDW74 was designed to have a length no greater than a typical humanoid's shoulder width, to allow it to be easily carried and maneuvered in tight spaces, such as the inside of a starship, shuttlecraft, runabout, or armored vehicle. To achieve this design goal, the weapon's design utilizes the unconventional bullpup configuration, in which the prefire chamber is located behind the trigger and alongside the shooter's face. The standard version of the weapon has an overall length of 500 mm (19.7 in), a height of 210 mm (8.3 in), and a width of 55 mm (2.2 in).
The PDW74 is now currently in service with military and police forces throughout the United Federation of Planets including Starfleet, the Starfleet Marine Corps, Office of Starfleet Intelligence (OSI), Starfleet MACOs, Starfleet Criminal Investigative Service (SCIS), the Federation Security Agency (FSA), the Vulcan Security Directorate, V'Shar, and the Andorian Imperial Guard.
