LOCKHEED P-7 NEPTUNEFrom the Secret Projects forum: Lockheed California (CALAC) was assigned a six-month study in the late 1960s by the United States Navy to explore technological and operational issues of possible very long endurance patrol and anti-submarine warfare (ASW) aircraft. Aside some conventional configurations, the study produced two blended-wing-body (BWB) aircraft. The design designated CL-1170-6-2, pictured below, was the largest of the two BWB designs and the final baseline. It would have been powered by four composite turbofan engines. The composite turbofan engine is a combination of turboprop and turbofan. The idea was to shut down the jet part of the engine during search cruise, using the fan as a tubed turboprop. Structure would be made in part of graphite materials. Wing area was 5,000 square feet. P-7 designation and Neptune II name are ficticious.
