LOCKHEED L-500During the 1960s, Lockheed intended to build civilian passenger and civilian cargo-only variants of the C-5A Galaxy. The civilian cargo-only variant was scheduled for introduction in 1971 and was designated the Lockheed L-500. Civilian passenger configurations were created with 527 and 1,000 seats. During the late 1960s, Verkuyl Models released models of the civilian cargo-only Lockheed L-500. A Time magazine article from 1968 predicted that the Lockheed L-500 configured for 1,000 seats could offer tickets from New York to London for $75.00. In reality, Lockheed decided not to enter the civilian market with the C-5A Galaxy. It would have been interesting if Lockheed had competed against the Boeing 747 in the wide-body airliner and wide-body cargo freighter markets.
